Introduction
At the heart of every modern elevator system lies a non-negotiable imperative: safety. While numerous components contribute to a smooth and secure ride, the Elevator Safety Gear stands as the critical last line of defense, a device designed to act decisively in the extremely rare event of a catastrophic failure. Its sole purpose is to stop the elevator car abruptly should it exceed a predetermined speed in the downward direction, thereby preventing a freefall and safeguarding passengers.
Core Function and Principle
The primary function of elevator safety gear is to halt the uncontrolled descent of an elevator car. It is directly linked to the car's speed-governing system. A governor device, typically located in the machine room, continuously monitors the speed of the car via a steel cable. If the car descends at a speed exceeding its rated limit (usually 115-125% of its normal operating speed), the governor triggers a mechanism that activates the safety gear.
The fundamental principle is one of converting kinetic energy into friction. When activated, the safety gear clamps onto the vertical guide rails along which the car travels. This forceful engagement creates immense friction, bringing the car to a controlled but rapid stop.
Main Types of Safety Gear
There are two predominant types of safety gear, each employing a different clamping mechanism:
Instantaneous Safety Gear: This type engages the guide rail immediately and brings the car to a very abrupt stop over a very short distance. Due to the high forces involved, its use is generally restricted to freight elevators or passenger elevators with very low operating speeds (typically below 0.63 m/s or 125 FPM). The sudden stop, while effective, is not considered comfortable or entirely safe for passengers at higher speeds.
Progressive Safety Gear: This is the standard for modern passenger elevators. Unlike the instantaneous type, progressive safety gear is designed to apply clamping force gradually. As the car moves downward slightly after initial contact, the mechanism increases the clamping force in a controlled manner. This results in a longer stopping distance but a much smoother, decelerated stop, significantly reducing the G-forces experienced by passengers and minimizing the risk of injury. This design prioritizes life safety over an instantaneous halt.

The elevator wire rope has special provisions and requirements. 4. How the elevator running?
Elevators are operated with a counterweight wire rope through the (tractor) traction drive, making ups and downs on the guide rail.
